Rabbit R1 Redemption: How RabbitOS 2 Revives the AI Gadget Revolution (2025)

Rabbit's Redemption: Can the R1 Rise Again?

The story of the Rabbit R1 is a cautionary tale with a potential twist. This AI gadget made a splash at CES 2024 with its adorable design and promise of smartphone-like capabilities without the distractions. However, its initial release was a disaster, plagued by buggy software and a long list of non-functional features. The backlash was swift and scathing, with prominent tech reviewers like Devindra Hardawar of Engadget and Marques Brownlee of YouTube calling it out. Even Rabbit's rival, Humane, couldn't escape the backlash, eventually selling its IP to HP and discontinuing its AI Pin.

Fast forward nearly two years, and Rabbit is still in the game, releasing its most significant software update yet: RabbitOS 2. CEO Jesse Lyu is asking for a second chance, and it seems the R1 has improved significantly. The touchscreen now functions like a regular smartphone, making navigation much easier. The interface has been redesigned with colorful cards, giving a clear view of its capabilities.

But here's where it gets controversial: the update's marquee feature, Creations. Creations are an evolution of the Teach mode, allowing users to 'vibe code' their own apps for the R1. With the help of the AI agent, Intern, users can create apps without getting bogged down in technical details. I tried making a guitar tuning app, and the process was surprisingly smooth and fun. It felt novel to have a say in how the app looked and functioned, even though tuning apps are abundant.

Lyu believes Creations are the killer feature the R1 has been missing, offering something unique that smartphones can't match. He's excited about the distribution system, which allows users to share apps through Rabbithole or QR codes, bypassing traditional app stores.

However, Lyu acknowledges the biggest barrier to R1 adoption is the need to carry two devices. He's hopeful that consumer demand will drive financial institutions to embrace Rabbit, especially for banking apps.

But is it enough? While the ability to create your own apps is compelling, most people just want software that works without the hassle. Software development is more than just putting an app out there; maintaining and ensuring it works for everyone is crucial. AI systems are improving, but they still make mistakes, and coding knowledge is essential for fixing errors.

Some smartphone experiences, like streaming music from YouTube Music, are harder to replicate. While Rabbit has shared documentation to help program Creations, it remains to be seen how long the novelty of vibe coding will last.

And let's not forget the app store model, which allows developers to earn a living. With Creations, only Rabbit makes money, and there's no infrastructure to charge for them. Creations also consume Intern tasks, which aren't cheap.

So, why not just make it an app? Lyu believes Creations are part of the answer, and he predicts a 'generational shift' starting in 2027. He hints at OpenAI's plans to release its own AI device, focusing on a phone-like factor, which he believes will be a bigger audience.

When asked about Rabbit's future, the company remains tight-lipped, stating they're focused on improving software and pioneering unique features. The challenge for Rabbit is not just OpenAI but also existing phone manufacturers adding AI features. Smaller players like Nothing are already announcing tools for vibe coding apps, so the race is on.

Can Rabbit's R1 rise again and find its place in a crowded market? Only time will tell, but for now, it's an intriguing journey.
